Drawing To Be

As an autistic/ADHD (sometimes called “AuDHD”) artist, I draw not only to create but also to be.

I draw when I need to listen, focus, calm my body, be at peace.

Sometimes I feel that if I can’t make art with my hands, my fingers and arms will burn with frayed nerves, and my spinning mind will take wrenching flight, no pilot at the controls.

I draw as an extension and expression of my being in the world. For wordless communication, memory collection, connection to others, communion with what’s so beautiful or otherwise intense as to make me either cry — or create — or both.

Art is essential.

So I bring my sketchbook! Who else does this, too?

Here are some of my recent sketches:

I am an autistic & ADHD artist and author/illustrator with a background in academia. I love making stories and illustrations that affirm diverse identities and encourage imagination. I also love spending time immersed in nature, art, and literature with my husband, two children, and rescue dog at home in California.
