Magical Outer Space

What do you write for a child who loves outer space, rovers, atoms, unicorns, fairies, princesses, and so much more?

A picture book full of both science and magic!

Our daughter loves her imaginary worlds of talking rovers and made-up planets, which to her are no less real than our own. They just happen to exist in “Magical Outer Space,” and are accessible in mysterious and surprising ways.

Our “Solar System Ballerina” in her Halloween costume (2018), with her rover poster (2021), and another dancing-through-the-universe moment!

In a project I’m calling Emily’s Omniverse, a little girl with a rich inner life finds her way into her imagined magical realm, and finds her way home again with a surprising twist.

With this story, I want to celebrate the worlds that she and I play in and remind her that her inner self is valuable and real and always welcome.

At the same time, I want to tell every child that their whole self – the world of their imagination, too – matters.

Drawing a draft of a dear friend

I’m revising the story and enjoying every moment of sketching and imagining its pages!
